... lost a little weight, he not too bad considering his [missing]. His food consisted mostly of boiled potatoe rind [missing] and what they had from the Red Cross.

You can probably imagine the reception he had, after we had waited so long to get news [of] him. On the day he arrived home all the folks [shook] him by the hand, and went in his house afterwards to have a drink with him.

He came home last Monday, after sending a telegram which arrived on Sunday. We had all [missing] flags put out again, which we had out for VE-Day and a few days after. Yesterday, (Sat), Mrs Avis and family gave a tea in the street for the children of the district, and afterwards we had a good old sing-song in the street in between the slight showers. It took more than a few spots of rain to damp our enthusiasm. The harmonious singing was accompanied by an accordianist, so as you can imagine a good time was had by all.

We also had a merry time on VE.-Day, [missing] all the neighbours in the street contributed food....
