Eddie McKenny to Mr & Mrs Lynes

The letter is in a wallet of photographs and diaries from my Grandad’s time in the war. He passed them on to my Dad.

Transcript:

Dear Mr & Mrs Lynes,

Just a few lines trusting you are both keeping in the best of health. Forgive me for not writing before now but it's pretty difficult writing two letters to the same house + Dorothy being with you. I guess you know where + what I am doing most of the time. Today is the nicest day we have had for weeks, the sun is out + for a change it's not so windy + if it wasn’t for the occasional crack of a gun there wouldn’t appear to be any war in this part of the world. Things have been almost at a stand still for some time - I think we will all be glad when things begin to get moving again, staying in one place too long seems to get us more browned off than if we were on the move all the time. I am billeted with a Dutch family at present + it's grand to be able to sleep in a decent bed once more although I think I shall be having to say goodbye to it soon. I am apprective to have 48 hours leave in either Antwerp or Brussels within the next fortnight. I would have already had it only it has been cancelled for a couple of days at a time even now I aren't sure of getting it but it's not worrying me whether I get it or not what I want it some home leave. Have you heard from Ken yet as to where he is now, I haven't heard from him for months now + I can't write to him as I haven't his address. Well thats all, hoping to see you soon. Best wishes, Eddie
