Donald Currie to Susan Jemima Bertram Shields

The letter was found by my cousin amongst my late grandmother’s possessions. Donald Currie was my grandfather. The letter was in a box of keepsakes.

Transcript:

Dear Mother,

I got yours today - the first since leaving England the others must have got lost. I am now out at an RAF place near Bedford with the Company guarding against parashots etc it is very pleasant & excellent feeding in the RAF Mess. The RAF certainly do themselves well & seem to get everything they want. I only expect to be here for a week untill Saturday when another Company will come out & relieve us. We had an air raid warning last night but nothing appeared.

At present it seems as though we might be remaining in Bedford for a bit on this kind of duty at any rate there seems little immediate prospect of getting overseas again; this sort of work is really terribly dull & uninteresting after France. However it may liven up a bit if Hitler tries invasion. Aren't .....
