Private Frederick James Jones was killed on 9th June 1944 during D-Day.
It wasn’t until his sister Hilda had passed away that her granddaughter Sarah asked if I wanted this letter which was sent to my Dad. It was in a drawer in her house.
Uncle Freddie was mentioned on Remembrance Service in 2009 where his mate Bill Evans told a bit of the story over in Normandy:
Bill always said these men are not ever to be forgotten and I always remember him. Thankfully he survived WW2.
Freddie was born 28th August 1924 in Neyland Vale, Pembrokeshire, Wales, son of Thomas and Sarah Jones. He was one of their 14 children.
After he joined up, he served with the South Wales Borderers, 2nd Battalion, B Company. His Service Number was 14578536 and was known as 36 Jones. Bill’s said because there was so many Welsh men with same surnames they had to use the surname and last two number of their Service Number. Bill didn’t even know his first name.
Glaniodd Ewythr Freddie a'r bataliwn ar Draeth Aur mewn llongau glanio ar 6 Mehefin. Cafodd ei anafu a bu farw o'i glwyfau ar 9 Mehefin 1944. Nid oedd fy nani Sarah yr un fath eto, meddai'r teulu wrthyf.
