An American woman to a Coldstream Guard she met in London

I inherited some old photographs from my grandmother when she died.

Amongst I found this letter and photograph of my Grandad’s brother, Richard Hird, who was killed in Bray Dunes in 1940. He was in the Coldstream Guards.

The letter is from an American lady who I believe was actually an actress. She visited Richard in 1936 for the presentation of colours. She wrote to him in 1943 to see if he was ok. Sadly he was killed 3 years earlier.

Dear Sir,
The writer of this letter is the 69 year old New York lady, that is in the Photograph with you. Taken when I was purchasing a Program from you, July 16th 1936 for the presentation of Colours by the Coldstream Guards.
My daughter took the photograph, that turned out very well and as I sent you a Copy, you wrote and thanked me for it and said that I was the First one that ever remembered to send you a photograph.
I appreciated the letter so much, and also the programme which arrived in New York, soon after our arrival, I think, or may have been received in London, before we left.
I am writing you, just to learn that you are well and safe with the world Topy Turvy, and if I could receive just a card or note that you are well I will be so happy. I was married in London in 1894 and love the city and its people. I am keeping my fingers crossed and thumbs up. so Good luck
