"I wish you could have been out here to see the camels"
This letter was sent from my Grandfather Edward (Ted) Culshaw to his son Anthony Culshaw (aged 11 at the time) in December 1945.
Ted was in the Military Police, stationed in Basra, Iraq and was very much looking forward to coming home, knowing he would miss Christmas with his family despite the war having ended several months earlier.
Ted is on the far left in the photo.

Hello Tony Son,
Just a few lines from your Dad to tell you how he's going along. Well! I'm quite fit and well and hope you are the same. I wish you could have been out here to see the camels and other things that would interest you. I have sent you one or two IRAQ Stamps, so you must look out for the letter. Did you have a very nice time at Christmas? Mammy tells me Jill & Johnny were there too. Well I've no need to ask really if you did have a good time, wish I could have been with you. Did Father Christmas have false whiskers? Trust you for seeing that. How's the rabbit and the hens? I guess you help your Paffy such a lot. When are you going to write a letter to your Dad? I'm looking forward to a few lines from you. Well! Tony love. I have not much space left so I will say I'm glad you are looking after your Mammy for me, take good care of her won't you. Wish I could nip over to see you, but I guess I'll have to wait. Cheerio Tony love. God Bless.
Love from your Dad xxxx
