August 15th - 45

My darling, apart from missing you constantly every second, one thing has marred my enjoyment of these celebrations & that has been not speaking to you yesterday as I'd been looking forward to doing. I'm so sorry my dearest, if you phoned at the time you said you would & got no reply. I left it as late as I possibly could but if I'd waited longer it would have meant my staying at home alone, & I could never have met anyone out by arrangement - you'd know why if you saw the crowds! Lois asked me to come out with some friends of hers but I thought I'd better not leave Fay. Sadie Ruderman phoned & asked if she could come out with us, & so we all three made our way out when we'd had some tea here - good thing we did that, cos we'd never have got any otherwise! We first managed to get a box at the Duke of York's Theatre to see "Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary" & though I didn't think I would, I enjoyed it very much indeed. It's one of these naughty farces about a honeymoon night - including bedroom scene! & lots of appropriately suggestive cracks, but quite good fun. We got out early & after several hopeless attempts to get food, walked from there right to Marble Arch, & it was very funny watching some of the sights. Piccadilly was simply a right mess of hilarious people - the only thing that caused an occasional space was when another American firework was tossed into their midst. Lots of fire-engines & ambulances could be heard & there were ever so many policemen, but even they seemed to be joining in the fun, & it was very amusing watching one of them being beseiged by an amorous, half tipsy girl. They certainly deserved to celebrate in any way they cared last night after seeing such a terrible war through to the end!

I felt myself very light-hearted and content, but oh, darling, how I missed you. I almost felt myself turning round at times expecting to find you there to share something amusing with me. When we got home I stayed up till after midnight in a vague hope that you might phone through I didn't really think you'd be able to make it then. How did you spend your time, my sweet? I shouldn't reproach you if you got drunk last night Mick darling! I do so hope this means, you won't need to go now - d'you think it's going to mean that darling? I know there wouldn't be so much to worry about now, but it would be terribly hard to see you go.
