"I had hoped to be with you fate thought otherwise."
This is the first letter from my father, Sgt William Richard Williams, to my mother after he was captured. He was a POW in Stalag Luft 3 in Sagan from 1 June 1942 to 2 May 1945.

... we are just coming up for my [unclear] Christmas in Germany. I had hoped to be with you fate thought otherwise. Still who can tell mayby by next Christmas I will be with you both. We will have a white Christmas here as we have already done some skating and it was quite enjoyable. I haven't heard from you since your letter posted 14th October. So I really don't know what to say except I love you twice as much as ever and I am dying to see you and our daughter. Can she talk and walk yet. I wonder if she will know me or on the other hand will she receive a shock at seeing her father (ha ha)
Never mind darling it is going to be fun and time is going fast. Merry Christmas to your Mother and Father from me, and to you darling ten thousand kisses.
Victorious New Year and God Bless you both. Your loving husband
Billy
