Roy to his mother Gwen

This was in my Mum Gwen’s belongings and we started to read them.

My nana was a widow at 34 and it must have been terrible for her to see her only sons going off to war.

The letter is from her eldest son Roy when he was in Caterham, Surrey, sent to her in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales.

Transcript:

Dear Mam,

Just a line to let you know I'm still kicking. You know we are not allowed out of barracks for six weeks, its like in prison, I suppose you no why we are not allowed out, because the Welsh Guards got a name to keep up, and untill we have had enough training we are not good enough to keep their name. You didn't tell me if you received that form, I've made a allowance of seven shillings at the Barry Road post office, but I expect they will inform you, we get two shillings deducted for when I come home. I receieved your letter this morning, and it was a God send, the first time since I been hear. I heard from Jessie yesterday, and posted off a letter to her. Thanks for the parcel although I haven't received it yet, it is Wednesday night, and the parcel isn't dew up untill tomorrow is it. Well Mam, [unclear] has been sounded again and lights out I'm finishing this letter off... the window so Goodnight Mam god bless you from
