We have a small briefcase which my father kept after WW2 containing military records, photographs and letters that he kept from his RAF service in India and Burma after he joined in 1941 when he became 18.
He sent this letter to Mary his mother in Thornaby on Tees while he was at station George in Burma.

Dear Mother
I am writing this in answer to a letter I have received from you dated July 7th. I am sorry you have not been receiving mail regular but I will see what I can do in the future. You asked me for a photo some time ago so I went down town last week to have my photo took and I am sending one off at the same time as this letter. It is a good photo but the snap in it looks awful but in the words of my mates you can tell it is me. I have also had a letter from Beth and she seems to be in the dumps. I sent her a parcel a couple of months ago and it has not turned up yet and as you know it was my second attempt to get one through to her if this one has realy went astray I will see some-one about it because it will be becoming a habit. I had it all sewn up and the address put on six times in half inch capitals so they cannot blame that. We have received no notice of any mail carrying ships being sunk for the past six months so they cannot blame that so that leave no one alternative and it is about time it was stopped.
I am glad that Mickey is still alive and kicking by what you say he is still pretty active. I hope to be seeing him soon it certainly can not be long now before it is all over. You say in your letter that you have had Albert on Embarkation leave. I guess they must be rolling them out now which is a good show because the more they send out the sooner I will get home when all this is over.
I have been receiving your papers pretty regular and not so long ago you sent me one with a novel in it which came in very handy indeed. If you can manage to slip one in now and again I would appreciate it very much. Cowboy novels or thrillers of any kind, sort, shape or nature are always welcome around this camp but please when....
