"I received your letter and air-mail card and I am sorry to hear you have had the usual English summer. The climate here is perfect, with the sun shining every day."
Gladys Slater was my grandmother’s sister. She passed the letters to me shortly before she died in 2015. I have 5 letters sent by her brother, Arthur, during WW2 from where he was based in India.
Transcript:
Dear Gladys,
I am sorry I have not written before, but I have just spent a fortnight in hospital with a slight dose of malaria. I am all right now however. I am getting used to this country now, although the currency took a bit of getting used to at first. You will be pleased to know that we are in comfortable barracks and the food is quite good. In fact I am having quite pleasant a time. We are only about 4 miles from Poona which is only a good sized village really, with bazaars all down the main street. I received your letter and air-mail card and I am sorry to hear you have had the usual English summer. The climate here is perfect, with the sun shining everyday.
Hoping to hear from you soon, love to all at home (including the baby).
Yours affectionately, Arthur
