"I am always anxious for the postman hoping he has a letter from you."
This letter was from our Grandma, Winifred Hunt to my Dad dated 7th May 1945.
Dad lost both his brothers in the 2nd World War and was sent to Rhodesia for the duration.
We found the letter(s) during the Covid lockdown in May 2020 whilst clearing out our garage. There are many other letters which we still have to read but this one marks VE Day 1945 with a note at the bottom of the letter saying “The radio has just announced the war in Europe is over”.
In memory of our two Uncles who gave their lives for Peace in Europe – Bernard and Peter Hunt RIP

My Dearest Maurice,
Thank you dear very much for your very welcome letter received 27/04/45. I am always anxious for the postman hoping he has a letter from you.
We have been waiting for the last two days for Mr Churchill to broadcast the Peace news, today we have been expecting it ever since about 3 o/c pm so I suppose it will not come until tomorrow now. All I hope is that the other war out East will soon be over so you will be home for good before long.
I have some good news for you about Jack McGuire we saw Jean & Ann & Peggy at church yesterday and they told us that Jack was a POW & I expect by now he is back with his unit or with the Allies we are so very pleased for her & his parents & now the way has ended in Europe he should be home soon. I do so wish that our dear Peter & Bunny could come back it would make such a difference to your Dad & I, anyway we shall still go on hoping. We heard last week that Don While was released & now the war is over, he should be over here before long & he will come & see us & tell us what he knows about our dear Bunny & the other boys of their crew.
I am sorry to hear about your accident with your teeth. I do hope you have had them put right again by now. Glad you enjoyed your swimming gala & the special dinner including the grand ice cake. Did you pass O.K in your exams, you said you thought you had. It is really funny about Mrs Graham matching poor old Bol up to Iris, we often laugh & wonder what Bol really thinks, anyway time will tell. You speak of Tommy Hadley we have not seen anything of him.
We went to see Grandad & Auntie Minnie & Grandma last Thursday, they were quite well & were very cheerful, we came home by tube to Turnpike Lane & got the last bus home so had to walk all the way home in the pouring rain & eventually arrived home about 11-15 pm & very glad to get here too. Our dog is growing very quickly & still keeps us very lively with his tricks & he plays in the garden nearly all day, he is very obedient I have seen to that. I had a nice letter from Dennis last week & he says he has not heard any more about coming home, but expect to be here about October. I went to see Mrs Wells twice last week, she has been very poorley with jaundice, but I think she is getting better now.
Well dearest Maurice, this seems to be all the news just now, Dad wrote you a nice long letter last week I expect you have received it before this. I hope to hear from you very soon, with fondest love to you from the girls & Dad & myself. God Bless you my dear boy & we hope to have you home soon.
We have just heard the good news over the Radio that the War is over in Europe.
Fondest love Mother
