This is a letter from my mother to my father when she heard about the end of the war. Written on the 29 April 1945 she starts by saying “Oh darling, there is such a big lump in my throat and I hope I am writing sense…..”
I have kept a few letters written between my parents and I re read a few of them yesterday during the VE Day parade and was very moved.

Sunday night
My dearest darling Charles,
Well darling there is such a big lump in my throat, and I hope I am writing sense, because I have just been listening to the 9pm news from London, and they announced that Munich has been entered, and thousands of Allied Prisoners of War have been liberated, and now, yes, I’m sure that you were among them and that you too are now free. Dearest, what it must mean to you after three years of it, only you can know but I feel happy beyond words - to think that you are in England now - perhaps not at this [unclear] moment, as I think you must have been freed [unclear] morning, but in a day or two maybe. Its wonderful dear - that you will be able to eat what you want, say what you want to, and do what you want to do. Thank God dearest for this great goodness. I understand that it will be a fortnight before I know or have advice or your arrival in Brighton, [unclear] perhaps I'll be luckier & hear sooner. Don't know how I'll be able to wait for two weeks. Already I can hardly think straight!! Love you so much, I must confess, I am feeling rather nervous - I don't seem to have any nice trusseau ready for our second honeymoon, so will have to sew extra hard during the next few weeks, so that we can pack up, as soon as you arrive and [unclear]. Mother and Dad will be expecting us the next day I'm sure! And I know how anxious you will be to see them all again [unclear] dear. So, I'll be all ready I think I will [unclear] write to [unclear] tonight to book for about [unclear] weeks hence! - that makes a month before [unclear] reach here, and 2 weeks (maybe) in [unclear] (maybe 2 days!) Can it possibly [unclear]? Yes dearest it is. Do hope that.....
