Sgt Reginald Low to his brother and sister-in-law

From my grandfather Reginald to his brother Robert and sister-in-law Eva.

It was sent from Persia where Reginald earnt a BEM at Andimeshk on 30 September 1943.

Discovered in the collection of Robert’s son David Low.

Transcript:

Dear Bob & Eva,

I'm afraid its good-bye for a few month, but am convinced that is all, so dont imagine that you will get away with xmas minus me.

I do so want to see you both and Michael and David, before roaming again, but the powers that be seem to imagine that we have no human feelings, although the object of the war is to protect just those things. Anyway leave or no leave, I'm on my way, and quite happily too.

Eva, I do hope Bole wont have to go, somehow I cant see it, and after the way you feed him, you probably wouldnt be able to see him after a few weeks on service food.

Hope the blitz is still passing you by, for 49 Mildenhall is one of my first calls on returning to "life" again. The PO made two attempts to obtain my release, but without success not that I am really sorry for when I go back to my home and job I want to go back to a life of peace, to be able to live my life as I and my wife and kiddies want to live it, which after all is the object of living.

To that end, a little discomfort is worth while though I often think that the poor old soldier suffers so many unnecessary discomforts merely because some one has an unusually large sense of his own importance and so little knowledge of human nature. The latter comes as the years go, so we are not without hope.

Well Pals, think of me sometimes, and one day I'll be dropping in for lunch Eva un-announced, but when I do I know you will be as pleased as I.
