Frank Mortimer to his brother Billy

I found the letter amongst my fathers belongings after he he had passed away.

He served as a rear gunner in the RAF and was stationed in southern Italy.

The letter was addressed to his brother Billy who was stationed in RCAF Dafoe Saskatchewan Canada

Dear Billy, Thanks for your most welcome letter which I received a few days ago. I'm sorry I hadn't replied sooner, the trouble be lack of airmail card as well as money. It's good to hear you're coping O-K, and I believe getting, or should be, bags of spam back there in the backwoods of Canada. I am not doing so bad, but confess, homes on my mind a lot these days. I find the climate is not to my liking, still then the climate wasn't made for me, so I shouldn't grumble really. If it all boils down, what I mean to tell you is I miss my pint a heck of a lot out here. "Mitchell's and Butlers" haven't yet extended their chain of pubs out here, they are loosing thousands of pounds by their lack of forsight. I am putting plenty of hours in, work and nothing but. I see quite a few films which pass the time, even though I saw most of them. It is quite a thrill to see a nice girl out here, let alone speak to her, so I shall have to content myself in pin up girls until that old boat comes along. I spend most of my spare time swatting flies, which I am afraid are well geared up on their tactics, and take some shooting down. Well Billy, it seems ages since I last saw, I bet you have grown quite a lot. You just look after yourself, and we shall have a party with all the skirts, I mean frills, after this lot's over. I go to bed each night, promising myself all the good times imaginable when I see "Blighty" again. The war seems to be going great now, it's good
