This is one of many letters to Gerald and his mother from George Tuck, his father, whilst held as a PoW in Java. This letter is to Gerald on his 6th birthday.
I am Gerald’s son and have been going through some of the photos and letters and memorabilia from my grandfather.

To my little Darling Gerald,
I think I must write a line to you this day. I shall not be able to send it to you my little darling love one but it will be a keepsake for you when I come home.
I must wish you all the best wishes & many happy returns of the day for your birthday. This day the 1st Oct 1942.
I only wish I was home with you all my dear little Gerald. Lets hope it wont be long before I am... I wish I could have sent you a present and a card I am not able to write to your dear mammy which nearly breaks my heart. I know mummy will get you a nice present for me. I hope you will get plenty. You must play with Dear little Elaine with the toys you get like you used to do. So cheerio from your Dear daddy xxxxx
