These three letters were found in my Dad’s war memorabilia sent to him whilst fighting with the Royal Artillery based in the middle east during WWII.
The letters were from two of his four sisters (Edie and Gert) and one from his Aunt Edie.
They thank him for gifts sent he has sent home to them – handbags and bracelets. His Aunt also talks about conditions at home and having to queue for hours for fish and meat. There is news of family members – births etc and his sister talks of not knowing where her own husband is at this time – he was serving with the Royal Navy.
I like how the letters describe life at home during this time and the ordinary routines of life alongside the uncertainty and unpredictability of war. My Dad was the youngest of seven siblings and his mother had died when he was 13. I did not know all his siblings but he was particularly fond of Edie and remained close to her and another sister Margaret throughout my childhood.
