Edgar Whyte to his brother Desmond

I found this letter in 2005 when my father Desmond Whyte passed away.

It was sent to him from his elder brother Edgar Whyte. Before the war Edgar was a champion heavy weight boxer Eddie Steel from Croydon.

Transcript:

Dear Des,

Just received your letter OK & I must say you are getting around & as I told you the army is not all honey but you will get used to it in time the same I have, & whats more dont dont be in such a rush to leave good old England as there is no place like it I wish I were there now.

As for the food well I guess you are lots better off than us but its no use worrying about such things, we must just get over it untill this hun is betten, we don't do to bad we get bread for 1 meal every 5 days the other is biscuits & we are very pleased to eat them as things could be a lot worse, the only thing they are doing my teeth in but apart from all this we are chins up.

So when you grumble just think how well off you are, old pal.

Now as for a lot of new of what we are doing well that must wait untill we meet all I can say is we have nearly been all round Africa. I had some very nice times & also bad times but as I say the Grenadier Gds are still chins up & looking for good old England very soon now we hope.

So close now Des wishing you many happy returns for 5 of May & I hope we are all home together for next year.
