"It won't be long before we throw the hun into the sea and so clear this place up a bit"
As a young man my father Harry Walton wrote to his sister Mary. On her death, the letters passed to me (Harry’s daughter).
I have two letters written around the time of the battle of El Alamein. My father was in the 7th Armoured Division Signals. He was very proud of being, in his words, a “true Desert Rat”.

Dear Sis
Just a few lines in answer to your airgraphs dated 15 Feb. Well Sis there is nothing very exciting to relate about this place just at the present but it won't be long before we throw the hun into the sea and so clear this place up a bit, and the sooner the better because I am just about browned off with looking at sand and killing flies which are just beginning to breed again with the hot weather just about to commence.
I had a letter from Chris a couple of days ago and he his keeping quite fit the same as myself. He tells me he has just had four days leave the lucky "blighter", he also told me that he could not get any beer, but he got plenty of spirits and he fetched a bottle back to his camp so that we could have a drink together if I called on him some time, but I suppose he has drank it by now, I saw his lot on the road the other day but unfortunately I could not see him because he was on the move.
[...] how are Pat and [...] keeping these days you don't seem to mention them much in your letters, but your hubby told me you sent him some snaps of them and he tells me they are looking fine and he [...] me to see them but I don't think I will be able to so you will have to send me a snap of them other wise I will not be able to recognize them when we get back.
