"We have all been under a tense strain waiting every day for news of victory in Europe."
I have a collection of letters ‘to’ and ‘from’ my parents Nellie and Edward Sykes dated between 31/12/1939 and the end of WW2.
My father was in a reserved occupation as a Police Constable at the beginning of the war and was called up in June 1943 when he joined the RAF to train as a Pilot. After basic training in the UK, Dad was posted to South Africa to train fully as a bomber pilot. As luck would have it, he gained his Pilot’s Wings just before VE day and was flown back to the UK.
In the following September, he was demobbed shortly after that and returned to Police duties in the UK. Several of the pilots he trained with were posted to the Far East and some were sadly killed before the end of the war with Japan.
This photograph relates to the ‘day out’ described in the letter where my mother, Nellie celebrated VE Day in Skipton with her close friends who had worked with her in Munitions while my father was away in Africa.

My Dearest Darling
I am sorry if I have been a few days in writing to you but you will realise that we have all been under a tense strain waiting everyday for news of victory in Europe. Now it has come at last and yet I cannot say I feel very much different, I just feel to be [unclear] as yet perhaps in a day or two it will come to me, then it is not the same with you being so very far away from me darling. We shall have to celebrate this victory when you come home. You will notice darling that I am using an Air Letter I found it just now in the desk. Mr Riley told Mother I was only allowed 1 of the forces letters in a week.
Well darling, on Monday Nellie & I went to a dance at the Mechanics and enjoyed it very much. I did laugh though I had a partner who was only as big as myself, but what a lovely dancer. He was a [unclear] in the D.L.Is age about 40 and very much like Gandhi that is about the best description I can give you. He was very polite, and said he had enjoyed dancing with me very much. I hope you're not jealous darling, he did not buy my supper or anything like that. Tuesday of course was V day and Rebe, Renee, Bessie and I met at 8-15. Wynne & Kathleen promised to come but did not turn up. First of all we caught a bus to Colne arriving there we had a good look round at the decorations etc. It then started to rain so we decided we would catch a bus to Skipton. Arriving a Skipton we went to the Black Horse where we had lunch, which was as follows. Pea soup, Roast Lamb Mint sauce roasted & mashed potatoes spring cabbage. Fruit tart & custard coffee. It was pouring down when we came away so we decided the best thing to do was to make our way back to Keighley. We arrived back in Keighley at 2-10 and went to Rebes where we made two large fires in the living room lounge. Rebe lives in a very large house and we felt quite posh, we were really lazy all afternoon. Rebe made us a lovely tea, afterwards we went to the second house pictures to see "Sensations of 1945". Eleanor Powell & Denis O'Keefe. It is not a very good picture, just passable. I arrived home about 10-50. There were crowds of people in the town especially in the Town Hall Square, dancing, singing and generally making the best of V day. Today I did not get up until 10.30. After dinner mother and I went down to Aunties arriving there. Nellie mother Auntie & I went out, I pushed Aunties then we sat on a seat in the park for quite a long time. We then went back for tea and stayed there until 10-15. So you can see darling we have done nothing very exciting. We are saving it all up for when you arrive home. Then we shall paint the town red. We have had no post this past two days so I am hoping there will be some mail for me in the morning. Everything is looking at its best just now darling. I do hope you will be able to come home when you have received your wings. By now you should have had them a week. I just longing for news about the wings parade. I will close for the present darling. Next time I write it will have to be an ordinary letter. I hope you will get it quickly. Lots of love darling. Your ever loving wife Nellie
