Arthur to Theodore Love

This letter is dated Monday 3 July 1944 and sent to Theo, my father, who was serving with the Royal Signals. I believe he was fighting in Italy at the time having previously been fighting in North Africa.

I found it amongst my father’s treasured possessions on his death. The letter is written by his father Arthur and includes a PS written by his mother which says he was dying (from cancer) and only had a few months to live.

Unfortunately as my father was serving in the army, he wasn’t allowed home on compassionate leave to see his father before he died or to attend his funeral.

The letter is interesting because although my grandfather wasn’t well educated (a boot maker by trade) he has a wide vocabulary and he obviously read Kipling well enough to quote him.
