Gordon Spence to his wife

This letter was written by my dad to my mum way back on 31 March 1942.

My very own darling Darling,

This morning has been hell and now its worse, but not for long my precious. We shall all be together again very soon, I am sure. God can't allow these dispicable criminals to cause so much misery, such unnecessary misery and sadness for much longer. I am afraid I couldn't face up to the "au revoirs" as "au revoirs" they surely are, but my darling you know how much I love you and our babies. Sixteen wonderful years have I to thank you for, my own, and, after a short interval, many many more to come. God bless you my Sweetest and keep you and all our little ones safe, happy & well. Give each them a big hug from their Daddy & tell Patrick I look to him during my temporary absence to look after you. John & Mary must also do their bit. With my love and kisses, my Blessings, and a great big hug. Your very very own ever loving and adoring husband. Pat

I shall pray for you, my Sweet and have have masses said for a safe voyage. Tell Doris to keep her pecker up. Freddie & I will look after each other; so you & Doris must look after each other.
